The Highlands Sports Association will be holding their third annual Pony Invitational slow pitch. The tournament has grown from 21 teams in the first year to 31 teams this year. The tournament was rained out during the second year. The tournament will have six divisions ranging from 6 and under all the way to 18 and under.

There will be three teams from Baytown participating in the tournament. The teams will be in the 6 and under, division as well as the 8 and under division, and 10 and under division.

There will be one team from Barbers Hill competing as well as teams from the Highlands. The local teams will be competing against teams from as far as Baton Rouge Louisiana and Burleson Texas.

According to Pony regional director Benny Gonzalez, lessons learned from the first tournament should make the third scheduled tournament a success.

“There was a lot of trial and error in the first tournament,” said Gonzalez. “This year we expect to make a profit which will go to the Highlands Sports Association.

“The great thing about this tournament is that it allows the kids to play at home. They usually have to travel and it is hard on the all-star teams to raise money all the time. And it is also nice on the parents with the cost of gas being so high. “

Gonzalez also went on to say that the entry fee to the tournament is also a reason that the tournament has grown. Slow-pitch softball tournaments usually charge $175-$150 per team for an entry fee. The Highland tournament only charges $75.

Teams will begin play tonight at 7 p.m. and will play through Sunday afternoon. Day passes to the tournament cost $6 for adults and $4 for students. Weekend passes are $10 for adults and $6 for students.
