HIGHLANDS — The 50th year of Little League baseball came to an end at the Highlands Little League fields Tuesday night. On the same field where the games were played, over 250 kids were given trophies and other awards in front of a packed house.

“This is the way it is every year at the closing ceremony,” league president Leonard Stuart said. “We try to do things right. It’s all for the kids, they deserve it. You can see the excitement on the faces of the kids. It’s probably the fastest they’ve run in a long time.”

In the T-ball division, the Astros won first place. Patrick Weber and the Orioles won the Bob and Cheryl Royall Sportsmanship award. Weber also won the J.E. “Jay” Bird Memorial Manager of the Year award.

The Christopher Reeves Most Improved Player Award went to Caleb Ulrich.

The Red Sox won the Minor 2 Division. Rusty Lamb and the Cardinals won the Tony Blaskey Memorial Sportsmanship Award.

The Mike Germany Coach of the Year Award went to Brian Hamm of the Astros. The Jerry Bickle Memorial Most Improved Player Award went to Taylor Roffe. Coby Schumaker was awarded for hitting the most home runs.

The Indians took first place in the Minor I division. The Earl Dickie Sportsmanship Award was given to Randy Pantoja and the Braves. The Dwayne Hill Coach of the Year was awarded to Steve Dodds, coach of the Astros. The Eddie Castillo Memorial Home Run Award was given to Johnathon Lambright.

The Braves won the Majors division in impressive fashion. They were the first team in 26 years to go undefeated. The Major Field Sportsmanship Award went to Harold Cross and the Astros. Cross also won the Pete Rupp Memorial Coach of the Year Award. The Mark Creel Memorial Home Run Award was given to Cody Schumaker and Kevin Williams.
