Beach City soldier killed in Iraq

U.S. Army Pvt. Wesley Robert Riggs, 19, of Beach City was killed near Tikrit, Iraq on Tuesday as a roadside bomb exploded during a routine patrol. Riggs is the first Baytown-area casualty in Iraq.
Riggs was a 2003 graduate of Barbers Hill High School and enlisted in February 2004.
According to his family, Riggs was an avid fan of car maintenance and "mudding." He spent a lot of time with close friends and enjoyed fishing, camping and dirtbikes. Riggs was a quiet kid but determined to finished high school, doing so in three years.
Riggs is survived by his father, Daniel Jared Riggs and his mother, Gayle McDermott of Pasadena. Wesley has three younger bothers, Patrick and Kevin McDermott, and Daniel Riggs, and two older bothers, J. William Kirk and Justin Kirk.
At least 1,622 U.S. military members have died since the Iraq war began in March 2003.
