WEST COLUMBIA — Wow! Say it again, please. Wow!
Chris Daniels threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Cedric Moore with no time left as the Barbers Hill Eagles beat Columbia, 27-21, in as good a high school football game as one can possible see here Friday night.
With the victory, Don Price’s Eagles go to 5-0 on the season with an open date next week.
Then Barbers Hill begins District 23-3A play by going to Cleveland.
This was a game no one deserved to lose but the Eagles certainly deserved to win.
Barbers Hill led 7-0, trailed 14-7, went ahead 21-14 and then watched Columbia, now 4-1, come back to tie the contest at 21 with 1:12 remaining in the game.
Barbers Hill’s Dale Sexton returned the ensuing kickoff to the 41-yard line to get the Eagles off on the right foot. Quarterback Chris Daniels ran for five yards before the Eagles were penalized five yards.
On the second play, Clay McWilliams broke for 29 yards to set the stage for the final heroic, coming as time expired.
That was Daniels’ throwing 30 yards to Cedric Moore for the touchdown.
Game over.
“Our kids did a great job, a really great job,” Price said afterwards. “I’ll tell you Columbia had a fine football team but I’m here to tell you we have a fine, fine football team, too.”
The Eagles started the game with a spurt, McWilliams going 53 yards on the first play from scrimmage. Jeff Koonce kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 11:42 left in the quarter.
The Roughnecks scored two TDs late in the second quarter to seize the momentum.
First, Jared Flannel went five yards with 2:01 left and Brian Rohde kicked the extra point to tie the game.
Then Columbia scored with 11 seconds remaining as quarterback Tim Vernor passed five yards to Justin Fields and Rohde kicked the extra point.
Barber Hill’s first touchdown of the second half was set up by Ty Terrasso’s fumble recovery at the Columbia 1-yard line on a bad fourth down snap.
On the first play, Bryan Gilbert went the yard for the TD and Koonce kicked the extra point to tie the game.
The Eagles scored quickly the next time they had possession, Daniels hitting Sexton for 36 yards and the TD on a fourth-down-and-seven play. Again, Koonce kicked the extra point with 4:49 left in the third quarter.
Barbers Hill drove to the Columbia 24-yard line only to give it back to the Roughnecks with 3:21 remaining in the game.
Here came the Roughnecks driving 76 yards in 15 plays, with two fourth-down passes from Vernor to Fields, one for 24 yards and the other 20 to put the ball at the one.
Darthard scored on the next play.
McWilliams was a hoss for Barbers Hill, gaining 86 yards on nine carries. Daniels had another 79 yards on 16 carries and he finished the night by hitting 4-of-11 passes for 69 yards.
On the offensive line, the push was led by Sexton, Adam Scott, Shelton Rainey, John Marshall, Adam Aycock and Aubrey Fitzhenry.
Another stellar defensive effort was turned in by the likes of Dan Walsh, Tye Blackshear, Pete Thurman, Ryan Porter, Fred Moore, Cameron Swart, Ray Nelson, Kyle Cox, McWilliams, Patrick Cook, Todd and Blake Patton, Brett Reid, Mason Fisher and Luke Arnold.
And then there’s this. The only injury reported was a strained knee by Price. He was involved in a wild celebration after the winning touchdown.
“You have to play when you’re hurt,” he said.
