HIGHLANDS — Michael Schubert dominated the Highlands Spring Classic at the Baytown Boat Club Sunday, with a first, and second- place finish in two different boat racing categories.

Schubert jumped out to an early lead in the Tri-Hull competition and seemed poised to cruise to a first-place finish, but coming around the final turn his boat stalled and left him dormant in the water. With second-place finisher Jerry Rinker barreling down on him, Schubert was able to get the boat started again and take the checkered flag.

“It was a good day for us, and we were able to get a win,” Schubert said. “The rain made it a little uncomfortable, but since there wasn’t any wind, it made the water calm and the course really nice.”

In a bizarre SST-120 final, Glyn Matthews took advantage of a couple of mishaps to finish in first place. Heading into the first turn at the start of the race, No. 2 pole sitter Nathan Worthy and No. 3 sitter Vince Voisin collided, causing both boats to flip over. Rescue crews were able to get the drivers out of the water, but damage to the boats kept both drivers out of the race.

“Heading into the first turning marker there was a lane open and all the sudden it was gone,” Worthy said. “It was just a racing accident and luckily no one was hurt. The equipment that we have for accidents such as this really makes a difference. It is pretty safe in those boats, but sometimes freak accidents happen.”

The 20-lap final was restarted after a brief delay, and Worthy’s teammate Darren Rube jumped out to a commanding lead. Just when it seemed that Rube would run away with race, engine problems forced him to drop out and Mathews cruised to the finish.

Schubert started in the No. 4 position, and spent most of the race battling Devin Corbit for second. Then with two laps left, Schubert made his move and passed Corbit on the outside to finish behind Mathews.

“We ended up second in the 120, but unfortunately there was an accident that helped us move up,” Schubert said. “There was also an engine malfunction that gave us a shot at second and it helps to be lucky sometimes.”

Renny Hardwick was able to claim the checkered flag in the SS-T 45 division. Jeremy Hebert and Misty Hamilton finished second and third respectively.

The Highlands Spring Classic was part of the Southern Professional Outboard Racing Tour that is nationally sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association.
