Needing a big play, Deer Park got one Friday at Abshier Stadium as David Ramirez ran past the Pearland punt coverage for a 70-yard touchdown return with 9:33 to play in the game.
Down by one point in a slugfest, Deer Park coach Jerry Creel gambled on a two-point conversion pass — and lost.
Pearland held on for a 35-34 victory, knocking the Deer out of the playoff race.
The Deer rallied after trailing 14-0 and 21-7.
Stephen Johnson threw touchdown passes of 20 yards to Jon Garey and 5 yards to Michael Henderson, and Garey scored on a 33-yard run in a 21-point second quarter.
Deer Park evened the score at 28-all in the third quarter when Johnson connected with Henderson again, this time from 44 yards away.
The Pearland running game was nearly unstoppable, though, rolling up 462 yards on 48 carries. Brandon Roberson rushed for 230 yards and three touchdowns, including a 1-yarder late in the third quarter that gave the Oilers a 35-28 lead.
Roberson also scored on touchdown runs of 21 and 5 yards. Pearland quarterback Brandon Buckner carried nine times for 225 yards, including touchdown runs of 81 and 60 yards. He was 4-of-7 passing for 70 yards.
Johnson was 9-of-22 passing for the Deer for 191 yards. Running back Joel Henson and Justin Jones combined for 122 yards on 25 carries.
Henderson finished with five catches for 115 yards, and Garey had three grabs for 65 yards.
