Ehric Wenzel’s 22-yard field goal with 1:51 remaining in the game lifted Deer Park to a 17-14 District 23-5A victory over Pasadena Dobie at Abshier Stadium on Friday.

The score was indicative of how close the error-plagued game was as Deer Park outgained Dobie 258-256 in total offense. The Deer, however, had 15 first downs to Dobie’s nine.

The field goal was the only scoring of the second half.

Dobie took the first-quarter lead on a Chris Davis 10-yard run. Deer Park answered in the second quarter when linebacker Robert McDonald-Douglas scooped up a fumble — one of four Dobie lost on the evening — and raced 37 yards for a touchdown and a 7-7 tie.

Davis answered less than a minute later, breaking free for a 65-yard TD run. For the game, Davis carried seven times for 86 yards. Teammate Adrian Dennis had 21 carries for 64 yards.

Deer Park again tied the score when quarterback Stephen Johnson found Michael Henderson on a 16-yard TD pass just 2:25 before halftime. Johnson was 7-of-16 passing on the night for 124 yards and an interception, and Henderson had a team-leading three catches for 32 yards.

The Deer also lost a pair of fumbles and were guilty of nine penalties for 75 yards.

Justin Jones did the dirty work for the Deer, as tailback Joel Henson continues to nurse an injury. Jones carried 27 times for 134 yards.

Deer receivers Jon Garey, Justin Akers and Henderson combined for all of the Deer’s seven catches.
