HOUSTON — The Deer Park Deer knew that North Shore was one of the top teams in Houston. They traveled to Galena Park ISD Stadium to open District 23-5A action and were bagged by the Mustangs 33-6, Friday evening.

The Deer had things stacked against them even before they took the field with North Shore. Joel Henson their leading rusher on the season, did not play and is still recovering from a hamstring injury.

Coach Jerry Creel was realistic after the game.

“We just played one of the top teams around. They (North Shore) are great on offense and defense. We got after them, but it was their night. We have to turn it around next week with Dobie,” said Creel.

The Deer defense slowed QB Bobby Reid and running back Justin McNeese but were not able to stop them.

After receiving the opening kick of the game, it took Reid four plays to open the scoring. Reid hit Tyrell Williams on a post pattern for 61-yards and a quick 7-0, Mustang lead.

In the second quarter, it was more of the same, as Reid and McNeese both added touchdowns to give North Shore a 21-0 halftime margin.

Reid dashed 54 yards on an option keeper, while McNeese dove from a yard out with 41 seconds left in the first half.

The Mustang defense held the Deer to 47 yards of offense and only one first down in the opening half.

Deer Park came out determined in the third period. They took the kick and put together a 52-yard, 13 play drive that ended with QB Stephen Johnson’s sneak from a yard out, with 7:10 showing.

With Henson out, Justin Jones took over the running load for the Deer. Jones finished with 78 tough yards on 26 carries.

The Deer did force three turnovers as Robert McDonald-Douglas, Chase Smith and Chase McDaniel recovered North Shore fumbles.

The 4-0 Mustangs closed out the scoring with long runs from McNeese and Clifford Gilliam. McNeese led all rushers with 136 yards on 17 tries, while Reid added 154 offensive yards including 65 rushing yards on nine attempts.

The Deer host Dobie next week and look to end their two game losing streak. North Shore travels to LaPorte to battle the Bulldogs.
