DEER PARK — Much like the wild counterparts of their mascots’ namesakes, the Clear Creek Wildcats feasted on the Deer Park Fighting Deer, 17-14, in high school football action at Clyde Abshier Stadium Friday night.
The Wildcats leapt onto the board on their first drive when T.J. Swan turned a direct snap into a 3-yard touchdown scamper. J.P. Padron added the extra point, and the Wildcats led 7-0 with 7:57 to go in the first quarter.
The Deer needed just one play and 23 seconds to answer the Clear Creek touchdown. Joel Henson broke free on a 77-yard touchdown run to pull the Deer within one. Ehric Wenzel netted the extra point and the game was knotted at 7 with 7:34 left in the first period.
The Deer looked poised to take the lead on their next possession, but they tempted fate one too many times. After driving the ball from their own 23-yard line, the Deer drive seemed to stall at midfield. Deer Park found themselves with fourth and nine and were looking to punt after a great effort by the Clear Creek defense. The Deer lined up to punt, and Clear Creek was called for having too many players on the field setting up fourth and four.
Once again, the Deer lined up to punt, and once again, Clear Creek was called for having too many players on the field, giving Deer Park a first down on the Wildcats’ 46-yard line. Despite having their drive extended by mistakes by the Clear Creek defense, Deer Park’s 18-play drive ended when Issac Walton picked off Stephen Johnson’s pass in the end zone.
The score would remain tied until late in the second quarter, when Clear Creek scored 10 points in under one minute of play.
The first scoring drive came on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Padron to Bryce Sauser. Padron capped the eight-play drive with his kick and the Wildcats led 14-7 with 1:32 to go in the half.
Four plays after the Deer took over on offense, Johnson fumbled the ball near midfield. The Wildcats took over with under a minute left in the half and mounted a four-play scoring drive which culminated in a 38-yard Padron field goal to give the Wildcats a 17-7 lead heading into halftime.
The third quarter belonged to the defensive units as both teams were held scoreless. The Deer tried a 40-yard field goal on their opening possession of the third quarter, but the snap got away from Wenzel and the Wildcats took over on downs. A second Deer field goal attempt for 48 yards in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter was wide left.
Clear Creek capitalized on a Deer Park fumble on a punt return to keep their opening drive of the fourth quarter alive, but it was the Deer who made the most of the drive.
After driving down to the Deer 17-yard line, Padron fumbled the ball on a pitch attempt. David Ramirez recovered for Deer Park and ran 83 yards the other way for a Deer touchdown. Wenzel added the extra point, and the Deer pulled to within three points with 6:50 left in the game.
The Wildcats ate up the clock before Padron nailed a punt that pinned the Deer at their own 3-yard line with 2:14 left in the game. After Johnson hit Justin Akers on a 29-yard pass, the drive ended with four incomplete passes and an intentional grounding call, giving Clear Creek the ball and the victory.
Swan led all rushers with 128 yards on 27 carries. Henson paced Deer park with 9 carries for 105 yards including the 77-yard touchdown scamper.
Padron completed 4 of 11 passes for 68 yards, kicked two extra points, made a 38-yard field goal and punted five times for a 44.6 average, including a 53-yard punt that pinned the Deer on their on 3-yard line.
For the Deer, Johnson completed 7 of 22 passes for 126 yards.
Next week Deer Park will open District 23-5A play at North Shore.
