Deer Park coach Jerry Creel expects a wide-open offensive attack from Klein Oak this week, and he hopes his Deer will not need one themselves.

Creel was disappointed the Deer did not move the ball better on the ground in a season-opening loss at Spring.

“We ought to be able to move the ball running more than we did,” he said. “We had some big plays, but we didn’t consistently move the ball. That’s one of the things we’re hoping to work on and improve in that area. By doing that I think it will allow us to throw the ball more effectively.”

Meanwhile, Creel said, the Panthers are focusing on the air attack.

“They’re throwing the ball a little bit more than they have in the past,” Creel said. “They’re running a little shotgun, fake it here, throw it there. It’s by design. And then when they get down, they’ve had to throw it even more.”

Klein Oak lost 52-6 to Tomball in Week 0, then fell 24-14 to Alvin last week.

“They’ve been struggling a little bit,” Creel said. “They opened a new school (Klein Collins), so Coach (David) Smith is over there moping around and acting like they don’t have any players. But we went and watched them play Alvin, and they stayed right with them.

“They did a few things kind of like we did in the first game: a punt return here, an interception there, but other than that, they played with Alvin very well. They’re not as down as he’s telling everybody they are.”

Creel said the Panthers’ attack creates some matchup concerns.

“It does create some problems for us,” he said. “Our strength is when people run at us. It’s gonna be a little more of a challenge for our pass defense.”
