Both seek initial district victory

Sterling and Channelview high schools are set to meet on the latter’s home field 7 p.m. Friday in an early “must-win” scenario.

Sterling head football coach Robert Toomer said each will need a win following losses in District 21-6A openers a week ago.

“Now it’s time to step up,” Toomer said. “We just need to get better at what we need to do. This is a neccessary, must win for both of us.”

Sterling fell 17-7 last week against Beaumont United while Channelview (2-2) dropped a 43-40 decision at Deer Park.

“They are very consistent and know what they are doing offensively,” Toomer said. “Defensively, they give you different kind of fronts and more of a penetrating defense that wants you to make mistakes. It should be a good matchup.”

The Sterling players are confident heading into the contest.

“There are things we need to work on, but there is progress,” senior Mekhi Stewart said. “At times you need to have a ‘W.’ But it’s not always about winning,  It’s about progress. We just need to all come together as one.”
