The Sterling High tennis team filled a hole left by a Channelview cancellation in district play with a sterner test Tuesday in Baytown.

The Rangers dropped an 11-8 decision to Clear Springs to fall to 4-3 this season.

Sterling lost four of seven doubles matches and mustered a 5-7 record in singles play.

Dave Daymiel, Steven Mauro, Brian Ward and Cameron Pequeno won in boys singles for the Rangers while Graceanne Carsey secured the lone girls’ victory.

Ryan Jones and Daymiel and Seth Dickens and Ward grabbed doubles wins as did Priya Desai and Alaina Hafer.

The Rangers host Kingwood at 3:45 p.m. Friday.

Barbers Hill 19, Dayton 0

It was an ideal way for Barbers Hill to open District 21-5A play with a resounding, 19-0 win over the Dayton Broncos Tuesday.

Barbers Hill (2-4, 1-0) travel next to play at Port Neches-Groves 4 p.m. next Tuesday.

Mason Daniels, Greg Yzquierdo, Stephen Wong, Ethan Sandate, Sam Cochran, Aiden Sandate, Sydney Underwood, Emily Tilton, Amy Buntin, Krissa Wright, Lindsey Del Angel and Autumn Walker all won in singles and doubles for the Eagles. Barbers Hill only lost one game in girls singles and a total of three sets during the entirety of the dual.
