Robert E. Lee and Devyn Burris finished the weekend with a 2-1 record at the Lady Ganders Tip-Off Classic.

A determined defensive effort helped the Robert E. Lee girls basketball team wrap up play in this weekend’s Lady Ganders Tip-Off Classic with a 31-29 overtime win over Klein Forrest Saturday morning.

The win for REL (4-1) was the second in three games during the classic for the tournament hosts.

Alyssa Ruiz finished with 14 points and Arcean Burris added 10 points to lead REL.

Ruiz sealed the win with a big defensive effort, knocking a ball away from a potential layup attempt, making up 30 feet from behind.

“We never give up,” Ruiz said. “I may be 5-foot-tall, but I feel like a 6-foot player. That’s everyone on this team. Height doesn’t matter. We feel we can do whatever we need to do to win the game.”

A short team, the Lady Ganders battled from opening tip to final buzzer.

“They are all competitors and they want to win,” REL head coach Robert Robinson said. “Youth killed us at times today, but their competitive spirit defensively really won the game at the end. They want to be here, they want to win and they want to work hard.”
