Travels for a Friday tilt vs. West Orange-Stark
Crosby’s final dress rehearsal before District 12-5A II play begins next weekend will be quite the test.
Crosby (0-2) and coming off a bye week, plays West Orange-Stark at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Cougars come in following a 39-27 loss at Manvel while the 4A Mustangs came close to ending Newton’s 34-game winning streak, falling 20-14 last weekend.
“They have some players that go both ways because of numbers and the size of school they are,” Crosby head coach Jerry Prieto said. “They have some really talented players, run a spread offense and have some good athletes at the receiver position and they have a running back that runs extremely hard.”
Prieto said the bye week came at a good time, although he would prefer it coming the week before district play.
“We were able to get back to the fundamentals and fix some of the things from the first two weeks,” Prieto said. “There were some technique stuff we had to address, execution things and getting more reps with the kids. We’ve also turned the ball over these first few games so we worked on ball control and security. I think we are progressing.”
Junior quarterback Deniquez Dunn comes off a performance against Manvel on Sept. 6 where he rushed for 191 yards and passed for 130 while accounting for three scores.
“Once he gets more timing and gets more reps and sees the reads more he will continue to improve,” Prieto said. “There was a huge improvement from week one to two.”
A good performance against a top program could jumpstart the Cougars.
“We will try to build momentum going into districts, playing one of the better teams in the state at their place where they don’t really lose,” Prieto said. “Building that momentum and off the positives we’ve had is pretty important heading into this game.”
