The Pony BTBA All-Star team based out of Baytown clinched the South Zone Coast Region-Houston sectional tournament at Jenkins Park with a 4-1 win over Deer Park Sunday.
The Baytown squad now moves on to the Regional Tournament starting July 12 at the NASA baseball fields in Houston.
The Regional tournament is the second step of three en route to a potential Pony World Series berth.
The championship win followed an 11-1 victory over Pasadena earlier that morning after that contest was delayed due to rain and lightning the previous day. Baytown led by the final margin before the storm shut things down in the fifth inning.
BTBA then wrapped that game up the next morning by recording three quick outs to earn the five-inning, mercy rule win.
Against Deer Park, Samuel Ibarra struck out six batters and scattered five hits over seven innings to earn the win. The Baytown offense scored three of its runs in the third inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead. They took advantage of nine walks and an RBI hit by Isaias Cuevas to secure the victory.
Five different Baytown players recorded a single hit.
