With soccer season officially underway, the pre-district tournaments are taking over the scene for the next few weeks.
Starting today, a handful of local teams are set for competition at various events including the Goose Creek Memorial girls, both Sterling High School and Barbers Hill girls and boys teams and the Crosby boys.
The unbeaten GCM girls will try to move to 7-0 after the weekend following a two-day trip to Fort Worth for games against Benbrook 12:30. Friday and Southwest at 4:30. later that day and Brewer at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
“This will be our third year doing an out of town tournament and second time we will be traveling to Ft Worth,” GCM head coach Roman Huizar said. “Several reasons I did this was to give the girls a different experience. Most of my players haven’t played soccer outside of school and had the opportunity to travel and compete. So I decided to try and give them that opportunity as well bring the team closer together and just focus on us from the team and competition standpoint.”
It also gives GCM a chance to step up in competition.
“On the girls side of soccer in Texas, top teams come from the north,” Huizar said. “So we get a chance to see different styles of play and quality teams. Last year we went to this same tournament and on the last day managed to make it to the final before getting beat pretty convincing 4-0 to 6A Waxahachie.
“I think going back with this years team is so much more because of the different dynamics I have on the team. This is an opportunity for the girls to create an even stronger bond, focus on soccer, and challenge ourselves against some tough and different competition.”
