Coach wins 100th with Lady Patriots
Goose Creek Memorial moved to 4-0 on the season with an unbeaten run of play in Day 1 of the Hoffman High School volleyball tournament on Thursday.
On the first day of pool play, the Lady Patriots swept all three of their matches while Crosby finished 1-1. Robert E. Lee went 2-1.
Action resumes today at 8 a.m. with day two of pool play.
GCM beat Aldine Nimitz 2-0 (25-9, 25-13), New Caney 2-1 (25-23, 21-25, 15-9) and Huffman JV 2-0 (25-21, 25-22).
Taylor Kotlarz had 20 kills over the three matches while Elizabeth Easley added 17 kills, Zoe Martinez had nine aces and Kennedy Jacquet had 10 total blocks.
Casey Veen earned her 100th win as GCM’s head coach.
“I think we gelled pretty well on the court,” Veen said. “When we played New Caney it was a totally different GCM team. We were clicking.”
The Lady Patriots take on Humble (9 a.m.), Heights (11 a.m.) and Dayton (noon) today.
REL (3-1) beat Northbrook, 2-0 and Dayton, 2-1, and fell to New Caney 2-0.
The Robert E. Lee girls continue their tournament with matches today against Hastings (3 p.m.), New Caney (4) and Willis (7).
Crosby (2-1) dropped a 3-0 (23-25, 23-25, 18-25) to Magnolia and beat Hasting 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-17) in abbreviated pool play with C.E. King dropping out.
Crosby concludes pool play today against Porter (2 p.m.), Hardin Jefferson (4) and Huffman JV (6).
BH 1-2 in Pearland
Barbers Hill recorded its first win of the season, going 1-2 in pool play at the Pearland tournament.
The Lady Eagles (1-3) lost to Ridge Point 2-0 (25-17, 25-10) and Bellaire 2-0 (25-14, 25-15) before beating Lutheran South 2-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-17).
“We got better every match, and that’s all that I can ask for when we play against teams that are taller and faster than us like Ridge Point,” Barbers Hill head coach Kristin Goodman said.
Barbers Hill continues a second phase of pool play today.
