REL, Crosby need to win to obtain goals

One team advances to the Class 5A II football playoffs with a win and the other achieves a landmark win not seen in many years.

Regardless, Robert E. Lee and Crosby high school football should mean a barn burner when the two teams match wits at 7:30 tonight at Stallworth Stadium.

Robert E. Lee (5-4, 2-4) saw its playoff hopes vanish in last week’s 19-7 loss at Vidor, but can still clinch its first winning season since 2006 when it went 7-4. This only the third year that REL has won five games in a campaign since 2007.

“We have a lot to play for and focusing on playing our best game of the year,” REL head coach Tim Finn said. “We are still a fairly young team – we are graduating 12 seniors. This is a great test for us to see how mature we are.”

Crosby (4-4, 4-2) will finish second in District 12-5A II with a win and a home game in next week’s bi-district round and can still advance to the playoffs with a loss.

Crosby comes in after a 36-29 double overtime win against Nederland.

“We are treating this like a playoff game,” Prieto said. “We want to control our own fate. It was a big win last week for us and it’s led to building confidence our kids and coaches have.

“Lee is very talented and a very dangerous team. Their quarterback (Ijenea) Wooley is one of the most if not the most dynamic player in the district. They have some really good skill kids offensively. They are a really dangerous football team.”

Finn hopes his team can fix the issues that plagued his squad against Vidor, which they trailed 14-7 at halftime.

“We weren’t successful running the football and we gave up points early,” Finn said. “The defense stepped up pretty good after the first quarter. We did a nice job on a drive at the half and got inside the 5-yard line. We got a penalty on third down which knocked our field goal to 35 instead of 25 and we missed it. That was a turning point in the game. We came away with no points before halftime.

“Crosby is playing for a lot but there’s another step for us to reach our goals too. This is a great opportunity to play a great program like Crosby and get that winning record.
