High-level youth girls softball is heading to Baytown starting tonight.

At Wayne Gray Stadium, the Shocktober Smash/USFA Gold Cup Stage 1 tournament begins at 6 p.m., as approximately 50 teams out of over 100 will play through Sunday.

Games start at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday and will go on through the evenings.

The tournament – which will also have games held in Houston and Texas City – is a fundraiser for the Baytown U12 Texas Shock 07 team and event organizer David Dahnke hopes to also promote youth softball in the city.

“We’ve built a lot of good relationship over the years,” Dahnke said. “The toughest thing now is having all these teams entered, you make the schedule and then someone drops which can make it difficult.”

The tournament finals will be at approximately at 7 p.m. with Wayne Gray hosting the 12U championship. The 14U tournament will wrap up in Texas City and the 8U and 10U will finish at the Houston Sportsplex.

The Texas Shock 2K11 (8U), Texas Shock 2K9 (10U) and Texas Shock 07 and Texas Shock Flash Nations (12U) are the Baytown-area teams who will play in two pool games each before bracket play begins.

Teams are mainly from throughout Texas and others will come from Louisiana.

“We can fill up these restaurants, gas stations and hotels,” Dahnke said. “It helps Baytown out a lot.”

Dahnke, who is the vice president of the Baytown Girls Fastpitch Softball Association, said local parents have come in and helped get the tournament ready.

“It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s well worth it,” Dahnke said. “We are trying to get our league to grow as well. We are trying to get everyone excited and get kids wanting to play in our league and not just for our select team.”

The Baytown Girls Fastpitch Softball Association leagues run from February through May and have leagues for 6U, 8U, 10U, and 12-14U fields.

Last year about 20 teams participated and Dahnke hopes for more. For more information on the leagues call Dahnke at (281) 902-7501

Baytown’s teams are entered in three of the four weekend tournaments – which also includes a 14U bracket.
