Volleyball team tips off Friday

After three straight weekend tournaments on the road, the Lee College Lady Rebels (8-6) get to stay in Baytown to host the Lee College Invitational Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Rebels will host Allen County and No. 18 Odessa College at 1 and 5 p.m. Friday and on the second day they battle Cedar Valley and Mountain View at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Both days will see action start at 9 a.m.

"I can see the growth in our team since our first match playing together," Lee head coach Danielle Essix said. "I do believe the sky is the limit for us. We are such a good team and you can see that by watching, but right now we get caught up making a lot of silly errors. I like how we are playing right now and I can see the vision in our team. I see how we can look."

Lee traveled to Dallas for a match against Mountain View Tuesday, winning 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-14).

The Lady Rebels enter their tournament on the heels of a two-day appearance at Odessa College where they lost to the hosts 3-0 (25-21. 25-12, 25-22), Midland College (25-23, 25-19, 25-21), No. 5 New Mexico Military (25-16, 25-19, 25-16) and beat Frank Phillips College 3-1 (24-26, 25-23, 25-13, 25-19).

Leading the way were Kennidee Willis (54 kills, 35 digs), Kelby Buchanan (79 digs), Shyeann Lampkin (29 kills), Aeris Ramsey (128 assists, 17 kills, 44 digs), Kim Coffee (29 kills), Holly Stutz (25 kills) and Macy Sumrall (34 digs, three aces).

“New Mexico Military was a tough match; they are very good and nationally ranked,” Essix said. “We showed that we can compete with a top five opponent. We earned a lot of points, we just need to cut down on some of our errors.

“During Frank Phillips you could tell their confidence came back and we came out with the win.”

Essix said the Midland performance was the weekend’s worst, but played much better against Odessa.

“We really showed up,” Essix said. “It was truly the first time we competed with a high level team this season. You could tell the girls were really excited to be out there and hustling together.”
