I have read several comments made previously by individuals in this editorial section concerning zero tolerance toward Hispanic immigrants. I am appalled by the ignorance, lack of compassion, and cruelty suggested by these individuals. The justification that they deserve what they are getting because they are entering illegally is hogwash with some exceptions. Zero tolerance has been imposed on a group of immigrants seeking political asylum. They are trying to escape violence, potential death, extortion and-or starvation. They wait in Mexico until the U.S. grants them permission to legally enter the country and wait to be summoned to present their case for asylum. It is then that they are incarcerated in cages fit for animals and their children are forcibly removed from them to be relocated miles away to similar concentration camps. No doubt our president and attorney general learned this tactic from Hitler and the Gestapo who imposed the same atrocities upon the Jews.
This is totally un-American, is cruel, inhumane and certainly not the Christian way. Are you serious when you proclaim that they should be sent back to face the horrors they are trying to avoid? Would you want to go back if this were your family? Have we forgotten that this country was built by immigrants seeking to escape many of the same persecutions this group is fleeing.
And unless you are a Native American, all U.S. Citizens are either immigrants or the descendants of immigrants. And speaking of the descendants of immigrants, it was only by chance that we were born here with the majority of us having to do nothing to achieve or earn U.S. citizenship. Gratitude, compassion and giving should be passed forward for the bounty that we were born and blessed with.
Please, never forget the pledge that we have made to the rest of the world. It is inscribed upon
The Statue of Liberty:
“Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
