re: “Who gives a damn or a darn?”
I thoroughly enjoyed Wanda Orton’s column Wednesday, which reminded me of my first week in the first grade (West University Elementary in Houston), when I was sent home with a note (after school) for my mother to call the teacher because I had used unacceptable language in class.
When my mother called, and she loved to tell this story, she asked my teacher, Mrs. Davis, what I had said. Mrs. Davis replied that I “shouted, damn fly” as I swatted one away. As my mother told the story numerous times to her friends, after hesitating for 10 or so seconds, she said, “Mrs. Davis, I think that his father and I have to take the blame. You see, I don’t think Jimmy ever heard them called anything else.”
