It happens every year. We get the first cold snap of the season and our children say, “I need a new coat. Last year’s is too small.” Or, the wrong color, or the wrong style or just not cool any more.
Fortunately, most of us can deal with the purchase of a new jacket without breaking the family budget.
However, for some, having a coat or warm sweater is beyond their budget. Food and shelter must come first. So, they do without.
Right now, Love Network, a coalition of Baytown-area churches, is gathering new or gently worn coats, sweaters, jackets and blankets for distribution to people in need.
Donations can be brought to The Baytown Sun, 1301 Memorial Drive, daily between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
Other donation sites include Community Resource Credit Union (all Baytown locations), Texas First Bank at 819 Rollingbrook Drive, Community of Texas Bank at 5700 Garth Road and Love Network headquarters at 206 N. Whiting St.
Many local churches are also participating in the drive. To see if a church near you is collecting coats, sweaters and jackets, contact Love Network.
The drive runs through Dec. 5
Each year, the holiday coat drive has given thousands of pieces of clothing to hundreds of families. Your generous help is needed again.
Please take a few minutes and look in your closets. Pull out those too-tight sweaters and the “what was I thinking when I bought this color” coat.
The holiday season traditionally is the time when people are most generous and willing to help others.
Let’s kick off that spirit of giving this season by donating to the holiday coat drive.
