On Sunday, May 12, 2019, over 600 Lee College graduates woke up to “a new tomorrow.”  Historically commencement ceremonies are filled with pomp and circumstance, a lot of applause, many big smiles, and a sense of achievement on the part of the graduates.  Such was the case on Saturday, May 11, 2019, as Lee College held two standing room only commencement ceremonies in our sports arena.  May 11 was a day of celebration, rightfully earned.  May 12 was a day of contemplation.  Some of our students will be moving into the workforce having been well prepared by our faculty and staff to utilize their newly minted knowledge and skills.  Other graduates will be continuing their education as they transfer to a university to complete their bachelor’s degree.

Lee College was honored to have Congressman Brian Babin as our commencement speaker.  His personal testimony and encouragement to the graduates that many opportunities await them was well received.

Throughout our lives we experience many milestones.  Each is special in its own way.  However, attaining a college certificate or degree is not only a memorable event, but it is also a testament to the dedication and perseverance one exemplifies in the successful completion of a program of study.  This accomplishment is not the end, but “a new tomorrow.”  It is a life changing experience.  What the student lived the previous day has now evolved into what the student will do the next day.

I often relate a college education to gifting oneself a key.  It is not just any key, but a special key that opens many doors for the graduate as he/she moves forward with their life.  You cannot buy the key, you must earn the key.  In contrast to many things in life, this is your key to keep, and no one can ever take it from you.  Education cannot be given, borrowed or loaned.  Once you have it, it is yours for a lifetime.

Lee College opens the doors to infinite possibilities for our graduates.  If you have ever thought about attending college, or started college but were not able to finish, now is a good time to let us help you earn your key.  We will help you open doors to a successful future.  You too can wake up the next morning after your commencement ceremony and experience “a new tomorrow.”  Our faculty and staff await you.  Take that step, that big step, that will lead you to new challenges and new possibilities.  We will help make your dreams come true.

On behalf of our Board of Regents, faculty, staff and students, I would like to congratulate all of our Spring 2019 graduates.  We are proud of your achievements, and know that your families are proud of you also.  Now it is time for you to make your mark on the world.

Dr. Dennis Brown is President of Lee College.
