re: “Why do you need an assault rifle?” Aug 14.

Frank Butcher asked the above question, but it is somewhat difficult to answer. By definition an assault rifle is a selective fire weapon with a detachable magazine. Selective fire means it can be fired one shell at a time or fully automatic. Now to the question, I think Mr. Butcher is referring to the semiautomatic rifles that are no different from other semiautomatic rifles except they are scary looking to some and hold more rounds than other semi’s. The answer is no I would not be willing to give it up, and I don’t even own one. As far as there not being a legitimate use for these rifles, another thing Mr. Butcher is not familiar with. Many people including my family members are diligently trying to help get the feral hog population in check and these extended magazines are very beneficial for this task.

The shootings that have stirred up the anti-gun crowd are really not the weapons fault but the deranged individual that misuses it.

I realize it is an uphill battle to try to get some to see that once the government starts picking and choosing what parts of the 2nd Amendment won’t be infringed then liberty is being lost and the Constitution is being bastardized.

Just as I respect your right to voice your opinion, no matter how much I disagree with you, you should respect other people’s rights and stop trying to take freedom from them.

Mr Connealy, you sound like an NRA spokesman. Regulating assault rifles has nothing to do with diminishing the Constitution, it's all about saving lives. Surely the life of an innocent child is more important to you than shooting feral hogs. And you must know that America had an assault weapons ban from 1994-2004 which was allowed to expire back when shoot 'em up VP Chaney ran the White House. We can't ban crazy, narcissistic white supremacists who pull triggers of assault rifles, but we CAN regulate which triggers they pull. The Second Amendment has no language protecting a crazed white supremacist's right to massacre. Besides, if we did ban crazy, racist white supremacists, Trump and half of the Republican Party would disappear.

Well said, Alan.

Mr. Connealy is correct in every assertion he made. Thank you for attempting to explain this complicated issue in a civil manner. It is beyond my comprehension why any voting citizen would hand away their Constitutional rights, but just watch and read folks. There are people ready to hand over anything the government requests. You sir, are an asset to the community.

What constitutional right, Bert? The second amendment reads in full “A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” What you and Mr. Connealy conveniently choose to ignore is that whole amendment is couched in the need for an armed militia. That made sense at a time when there were Indian conflicts on the frontier and militias were necessary for the protection of communities. Militias played an important role in the War of 1812 because we did not have a significant standing army. We no longer have Indian wars and we now have one of the largest standing armies in the world, so militias are obsolete. Does that mean the 2nd Amendment is outdated? Why didn’t the founding fathers leave out the first part and simply write “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”? Could it be that they envisioned a day when militias would no longer be needed and the right to bear arms should not be absolute? Any objective reading of the second amendment would conclude that absent the need for a WELL-REGULATED militia, the right to bear arms is not a right guaranteed by the constitution. It might be a right if enacted into law by congress, but it is not a constitutional right.
