On Thursday, October 31, 2019, Linda Kay Sumrall Jones, devoted wife and beloved mother of two children, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren passed away at the age of 78 at her daughter’s home in Baytown, Texas.
Born in Galveston, Texas on November 11, 1940 to parents Lamar J. and Edna Althea Sumrall, Linda lived for most of her life in the Baytown area.
On August 3, 1955, she married WWII navy veteran Glenn S. Jones from Fort Collins, Colorado and began what turned out to be a lifetime of travel as he built a career in the oil & gas exploration industry. They lived in and visited many places over the course of the next 31 years including Australia, Singapore, Papua New Guinea, London, Paris, and Texas.
After settling for good back in Texas Linda entered nursing school at the age of 40 and became a Licensed Vocational Nurse graduating at the top of her class. Her compassion for others and inherent kindness made her a natural at this job as she cared for young and old alike for another 29 years, retiring from San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in 2010.
Linda had many hobbies and enjoyed gardening, shopping, travel (especially cruising the Caribbean) and a particular affection during retirement for quilting. Her family, however, was her over-riding passion and she always attended and followed all of the various activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was affectionately called (NeeNaw) and was a fun and loyal friend to many, along with her wonderful sense of humor, and as the rock of our family.
Linda is preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 50 years Glenn S. Jones.
She is survived by her current husband Alfred Zeller, her brother Lamar J. Sumrall Jr. and wife Eddy, her son Jessy L. Jones and wife Kelcy, her daughter Glenda K. Knowles and husband Jody, grandchildren Jennifer Colvin and husband Michael, Jonathan Walters, Kannigan Jones, Jaci Brennan husband Dean and Nathan Knowles, great grandchildren Braxton, Maci Kay, and Grady Colvin.
Rest in peace mom… We love you and always will. Words cannot express how much we miss you already and we will remember you every day until we meet again.
