A 51-year-old woman was arrested after allegedly setting a fire in a Baytown apartment building Tuesday. No one was injured, but the Baytown Fire Department estimated damage to the building and to residents’ belongings to be more than $250,000.
City of Baytown spokeswoman Alicia Jauregui said the fire department was alerted by an automatic alarm about 9 p.m. and responded to Centennial Square Apartments at 805 Schilling.
When they arrived, there was heavy smoke on the third floor of the building. Most residents had already evacuated, Jauregui said, and the sprinkler system had extinguished the fire.
Neighbors broke down the door of the apartment and tried to extinguish the fire, but the smoke was too thick.
Investigators found three points of origin for the fire within apartment 323.
Only the one apartment had fire damage, she said, but four other apartments had water damage from sprinklers.
Fire Marshal Fred Spencer determined that the resident of the apartment, Bobbie Thompson, set the fire, Jauregui said. Thompson was arrested and taken to the Baytown jail.
