Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia is looking at the lifeguard program at Sylvan Beach Park to consider adding more days of coverage.
Three siblings, 7, 11 and 13, drowned at the park about 7 p.m. Thursday. Their 10-year-old brother and parents also got into trouble in the water but were able to make it back to shore with the assistance of other swimmers.
Garcia spokeswoman Frida Villalobos said the park now how lifeguards 8:30 a.m.-8:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and Garcia has asked the Precinct 2 Parks Department to look at expanding that coverage to seven days a week.
“That’s not in place right now; that’s something we’re looking at doing, but we don’t have a date of when that’s going to change,” she said.
She said the Friday-Sunday schedule has been in effect for many years.
Villalobos said Sylvan Beach is the only public beach in Precinct 2.
While Sylvan Beach Park is in Harris County, in that area the shore is the county line, so the water is in Chambers County, meaning that the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office is investigating last week’s deaths.
Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said the family may have been caught by undertow.
