Two people lost their lives in separate traffic accidents Wednesday morning, as Baytown fire, EMS and police personnel scrambled to respond during an already nightmarish traffic situation that had areas around the two major bridges gridlocked.
The first fatal crash occurred about 4:45 a.m. on the approach to the Fred Hartman Bridge.
Baytown police spokesman Lt. Steve Dorris said a Ford F-250 traveling south hit a stalled Hyundai Accent, knocking that vehicle into the rear of a Toyota Camry being driven by 63-year-old James Culps of Baytown.
Culps was taken to HCA Houston Healthcare by EMS but did not survive his injuries.
Dorris said the drivers stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. There is no indication alcohol was involved.
The second, involving a motorcycle rider, was about one hour later on Decker Drive in front of the ExxonMobil Main Office Building.
Dorris said police responded to the crash at 5:36 a.m. to find the motorcycle operator lying in the grass and the motorcycle in the roadway.
He said the 25-year-old Louisiana man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a helmet and the accident did not appear to involve any other vehicles. His identity is being withheld pending notification of his family.
