Today is the last day to register for disaster assistance from FEMA related to damage from Tropical Storm Imelda.

Hattie Stallworth, FEMA media relations specialist, said the agency has already seen more than 6,000 people and approved more than $63 million in individual assistance for homeowners and renters. You can apply for assistance today on the FEMA helpline at 800-621-3362 or disasterassistance.gov.

You can also apply in person at one of the disaster recovery centers. The closest one for the Baytown and Chambers County areas is at the Winnie Stowell Community Building, 335 South Park Street in Winnie.

While today is the final day to apply for direct financial assistance from FEMA, Stallworth emphasized that it is not the last day for the disaster recovery centers or for phone or online assistance. Those continue to be able to refer storm survivors to a wide array of resources that will still be available.

Chambers County Public Information Officer Ryan Holzaepfel said FEMA’s Winnie location will remain open through Saturday.
