A 5-year-old boy was struck by an SUV in the 3500 block of West Baker Road about 3:10 p.m. Tuesday, apparently suffering head and leg injuries, according to Baytown police.

Police spokesman Lieutenant Steve Dorris said the boy was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. The extent and severity of his injuries were not known, Dorris said.

The driver of the SUV, a 20-year-old Baytown woman, stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, Dorris said. She did not show any sign of intoxication or impairment.

Accident reconstruction officers will be conducting a thorough investigation of the accident. A preliminary investigation, Dorris said, suggest the child may have wandered away through an unlocked door of his nearby home while his mother was distracted with one of her other children.
