Former Lee College president Dr. Michael Murphy died on July  2, 2019.

Murphy, who assumed the presidency on Jan. 5, 2009, following the resignation of Dr. Martha Ellis, guided the college through a period of change.

Shortly before he was hired, 30 longtime faculty, staff and administrators filed for retirement. Murphy’s hiring also followed Hurricane Ike, which swept over the campus as it smashed windows, drenched offices and battered landscaping.

Prior to joining Lee College, Murphy served as a consultant for the Association of Community College Trustees. During his tenure at ACCT, he served as interim president at three institutions.

Additionally, Murphy has also served as president/CEO of the College of DuPage, in suburban Chicago, one of the nation’s largest community colleges. He also served as president/district officer at St. Louis Community College; chief academic officer at Harford Community College and dean at Towson University’s College of Continuing Studies in Baltimore.

Murphy was succeeded by current Lee College president Dr. Dennis Brown.
