The Baytown Police Department is investigating the second drive-by shooting in Baytown in a week, but authorities say they’re not related.

Baytown police said two males, an 18-year-old and a 23-year-old, were shot in the 3400 block of Illinois Street around 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Lt. Steve Dorris, Baytown police spokesman, said the two victims were walking in an alleyway when a dark-colored car, possibly a Mustang, drove down the alley and fired several shots at the two men.

“The 19-year-old was struck at least one time in the torso and the 23-year-old was struck multiple times in the arm,” Dorris said. “Both victims were flown to Hermann Hospital in Houston to be treated for their injuries.”

Due to the injuries, the 23-year-old underwent surgery, and both are expected to survive, as their injuries were not considered life threatening.

“Detectives are actively investigating and hope to be able to talk to the victims, who are both still hospitalized, later (Wednesday) to get some clearer details about what transpired in the alleyway,” Dorris said.

The Wednesday shooting marks the second drive-by shooting in a week, as Sam Wingate, 84, was shot while on a morning walk on Aug. 15. Again, police say there is no relation between the two shootings.

Baytown police said the elderly victim was walking with another man in his 70s around 6:30 a.m. in the 9600 block of Pinehurst Drive when a light-colored sedan drove up behind them and shot the man in the back.

Wingate succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, making the case a homicide.
