Major portions of the San Jacinto Mall are being demolished as the effort to turn it into the San Jacinto Market Place continue. Demolition on the mall began in June. Natasha Barrett, City of Baytown spokeswoman, said the process is ongoing but slow.

“What is taking so long is that they are recycling some of that material,” Barrett said. “And they are doing it in parts while a couple of stores are still open for business. Each day they are breaking down more.”

Construction of San Jacinto Market Place, which will be 1 million square foot open-air concept shopping center featuring a large, green-space plaza, creating a venue for a variety of gatherings, festivals, concerts and events, is expected to start sometime in the first quarter of next year.
