The local Knights of Peter Claver, Inc. - Council #341 who’s current Grand Knight is Brother Marc Morris, recently awarded its annual Vernon J. Bernard Memorial Scholarship to Ryan Jackson. This scholarship is given out annually to a deserving student in the name of Brother Vernon Joseph Bernard.
Bernard was a loyal parishioner of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in McNair. He was a former member of the Knights of Peter Claver – Council #198, at St. Martin DePorres Catholic Church in Barrett Station. He later became a member of KPC - Council #341.
Bernard was a member of the United States Army, Private First Class of the 212th Port Company. A veteran of World War II, he received an honorable discharge at Camp Shelby in Mississippi on Dec. 12, 1945.
Bernard was a father-like figure to many individuals and was a very giving person. He was one of those individuals who truly believed in helping others and was indeed one of God’s angels who spent some time on this earth. It is an honor to be one of the high school graduates selected to be the recipient of this scholarship.
This year the local KPC group was honored to award Ryan Jackson its 2019 KPC scholarship because of the wonderful young man he is and because of his accomplishments.
Ryan Jackson is the son of Tiffany and Rodney Jackson. He graduated from Family Christian Academy with a GPA of 3.6 and SAT score of 1060. His greatest strength is anything pertaining to math.
In high school, Ryan was an A/B honor roll student throughout his high school career, captain of the varsity basketball team, 2nd Team All-State basketball player and member of his high school’s band.
Honors received by Ryan were San Jacinto College Honor Society and basketball team MVP. He led his high school basketball team in scoring and rebounds.
Jackson and his family are members at Holy Family Catholic Church and his father is the choir director, Ryan was an alter server for 10 years, member of the church youth choir and member of the KPC Junior Knights.
His role model is his mom, Tiffany, because no matter what comes her way, hurdles she has to jump over, or if she gets knocked down, she finds a way to get back up and keep fighting.
Ryan’s plans are to attend the University of Houston, which has a great nursing program. He made the choice to not continue his studies in music, but rather to focus on his true calling of helping others in the medical/nursing field.
Ryan wants to major in nursing because he loves helping people in need.
He has also mentioned he may continue his studies into anesthesiology.
It was an honor for the Knights of Peter Claver, Inc. - Council #341 to award the prestigious Vernon J. Bernard Memorial Scholarship to Ryan Jackson. The council has no doubt Ryan will succeed at whatever he puts his mind to. His hard work and effort will take him far. It is very impressed with the young man he has grown up to be.
