Summer is approaching; the temperature is getting hotter every day, so I would like to remind everyone to stay hydrated. It is important that everyone drink plenty of water every day. Sugary and carbonated drinks contain caffeine which accelerates dehydration. Two of the most common signs of overheating due to lack of water are nausea and dizziness; these can lead to heat exhaustion.

Studies show that drinking plenty of water before, while, and after you are active will help prevent dehydration. This is especially important when it’s hot outside and when you perform intense exercise. We recommend having a container of water with you when you exercise, and try to drink at least every 15 to 20 minutes.

Another factor that we must think about during the summer is sun exposure. Did you know that most people get 20-80 percent of their lifetime sun exposure before they turn 18?  Therefore, it is important for children as well as adults to apply sunscreen before they head outside, then reapply sunscreen every two hours.

With the upcoming hot days of summer, I would like to invite the community to The Wellness Center of Bayside. This summer we are offering additional activities to get citizens in out of the heat. We offer group fitness and water fit classes weekly throughout the day. From Zumba, Pilates, Yoga, Indoor Walking, Senior Classes and Water fit we have something for everyone.

The Wellness Center at Bayside will begin some exciting activities for the youth. First, beginning Friday June 7th we will kick off a 7-week Summer Bash, concluding Aug. 2. The Summer Bash is a FREE kid’s day program series hosted at The Wellness Center at Bayside and sponsored by Chambers Health and other area community organizations.  Special guests will present fun and educational interactive lessons at each program.  After each lesson the attendees will be provided with a free lunch. This program is from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. (followed by a free movie).

Let’s not forget about our friendly game of 42 offered every morning, the Chicken-Foot game on Mondays at 1 p.m. and Free Movie Fridays at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. These activities are open to the public and there is no cost to attend. You do not need to be a fitness member of The Wellness Center at Bayside to participate in most of our activities, especially these games and community events.  We also offer free wi-fi at the Center.

The Wellness Center at Bayside is equipped with the resources you need to begin your journey to a healthier you. If you haven’t exercised in a while, don’t forget to check with your primary care provider before starting an exercise plan.  If you have any questions about the activities above or any other services, call us at 409-267-3700.

Janice Jircik is director of The Wellness Center at Bayside.
