Letters to the Editor
January 7, 2009
Bravo to Leeland! I cannot think of a better New Years Eve. Leeland performed a free concert at Lakewood Church in Houston on New Years Eve and gave a Grammy Award performance. These boys deserve our support and love.
They are truly gifted musicians, singers, and minister. I took several teenagers that thought Leeland totally rocked (and thought the twins were cute).

Above and beyond
Wow! What a year this has been.
I’ve heard it said when asked, “How are you doing?” The reply has sometimes been, “Better than I deserve.” How true for all of us.
Even those who have lost so much last year, still have so much more than many in this world. In the Baytown area, if Ike didn’t get you, the loss of income through the problems in the economy has. A good many folks have had both hit their families in 2008. Still, good people dig down a little deeper and give of the things they still have.
We are aware that many of the schools which normally contribute a large amount of food at Christmas time, gave early at the end of last year to help families at Thanksgiving. Teachers and counselors knew of families within their schools that had been devastated by the hurricane. Hungry kids can’t wait for December. God Bless you for your help when needed.
However, when the “Share Your Holidays” food drive took place on Dec. 5, we were concerned. Normally, we start out early with a trailer load of food from Sterling High. This year their “Ho Ho Ho Drive” didn’t take place until Dec. 8th. After waiting in the rain all day at the Wal-Mart collection location, one trailer full of food arrived. We expected to help 400 to 500 families on Dec. 11. We had food for about 100. On Monday night, when the students hosted their drive, Baytown again opened their pantries, wallets and hearts and by Tuesday morning, we had the food the young people from Sterling collected, and total donations of about $1,500 from the community, with which to purchase hams and other food items from the Houston Food Bank. With you help, we were once more able to give food to about 300 families on Dec. 11, (the weather kept the crowds down) which included over 900 individuals within those families. Each family received a ham, several large bags of non-perishable food items and several bags of produce. Just think what this would cost you if you bought it for your family on the open market! Now multiply that by 300 for one day, with another 75 to100 families coming each week since Thanksgiving. Without your help, we could not continue this work.
Our prayers for you and your family is that you are provided with jobs and the health to work, good health for you and your family and peace to accept the things that have happened to cause stress in your lives and the ability to fix what you can to make this world a little kinds and gentler place to live. We wish you a “Happy New Year” and thank you all for thinking of others. Your help is so appreciated by all concerned.
