For 13 years, a little Mexican restaurant has stood on North Main, offering a lunch special every day.
The day I went there was pretty special.
You might have driven by it many times without even thinking it was there, but Que Lindo es Mexico has been sitting there, waiting for you to come inside. I had done this myself for years, never paying attention to the little light orange building.
But driving to work one day, I noticed a sign outside saying the place was open. The sign looked new, so I thought maybe it had just opened or had new owners. Upon speaking to the nice lady behind the counter, I discovered it had been there for more than a decade.
The inside looked neat with clean tables. A menu written on an ink board tells you what food items you can get, and just in case that is not enough, a chalkboard behind has even more food choices. Of course, there was the daily lunch special menu as well.
What to choose? Lunch tacos for $4.99? How about some rancheros or chilquiles? Well, let’s keep it simple, stupid and go with the lunch tacos - that and a delicious Coke straight from Mexico, the one with the more natural taste.
The nice lady served it right up with some red (salsa roja) and green (salsa verde) sauce that left the taste buds burning because it was so spicy. In fact, it was several hours before the spiciness began to wear off.
That is when you know you have partaken of real Mexican red and green salsa.
The tacos…there was four, did the job right. It had bistec (you can get chicken if you want) inside a flour tortilla with cilantro and onions. Put some red and green sauce on that, and you have a real Mexican treat. Like Daffy Duck used to say “drool, drool, drool!”
You can get your tacos with cheese and potatoes if that fits your fancy.
Que Lindo es Mexico (which means “how nice is Mexico?”) not only serves lunch, but breakfast as well. You can get ham with eggs, bacon with eggs, chorizo with eggs, salchicha with eggs or divorciados. And breakfast tacos? You bet! Potato, ham, bacon, and everything you want in your breakfast taco is on the menu.
Even if you want a good old hamburger and fries, the friendly workers there can set you up with that, too.
My advice: just do it.
Que Lindo es Mexico is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. It is located at 1800 N. Main, Baytown. To order ahead, call 281-420-7457.
