Dave Sherron, longtime purchasing agent for Goose Creek CISD and later manager and CEO of the Baytown Teachers Credit Union, died Saturday. Arthur David Sherron was 86.
Sherron originally came to Baytown in the retail business in 1959 as manager of the Beall Bros. Department Store on Texas Avenue, and was hired by the school district in 1967 to head up its purchasing department.
Security was also added to that job, which he held for 38 years.
When Sherron was honored as a Baytown Sun Citizen of the Year finalist in 2011, he said his favorite volunteer activity was, as a reserve deputy constable, escorting school buses to athletic activities and to the Shrine Circus in Houston.
Sherron was a life member of the Paris, Texas, Masonic Lodge No. 27, the Texas City Chamber No. 626, Order of the Eastern Star and the Arabia Temple Shrine Club in Houston.
He was a 32nd Degree Mason.
Soon after coming to Baytown, Sherron became active in the community, quickly joining the Kiwanis Club and serving as chairman of the Christmas parade, as well as helping with the lineup of the Youth Fair Parade.
He volunteered as assistant director of civil defense for the City of Baytown for 10 years starting in 1960, and was a reserve deputy constable from 1961 to 1980.
Other activities included serving as a member of the Baytown Industrial Appraisal Review Board, member of the Baytown Chamber of Commerce, director of the Gulf Coast Area Credit Union, lifetime member of the Texas Association of School Business Officials and Texas State Teachers Association.
He was a 55-year member of St. John’s United Methodist Church, where he served as a board member and finance chair.
He is survived by his wife, Doris; his daughter, Darla Racz-McKenna; and his son Mark David Sherron and many other family members.
Sherron’s funeral service will be at 1 p.m. today at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 501 S. Alexander Drive, in Baytown. Burial will following at Grandview Memorial Park in Pasadena.
